NOSTALGIA
Aubrey Malone, the last of nine kids, resurrects his mum and dad (see
photos p12 & 15). Tom Kelly searches for his ancestors in Newcastle (but
doesn’t find them) while Bob Wild recalls a childhood guzzling pies in
the years of dearth. In fact, to get slightly off message, I’ve become
acquainted with oik pie mania after a visit to my cousin Derek. We’re
now both old farts ourselves but his kids are also mad on pies and the
chief addict Dr Mike Beswick (not a proper Dr but a Cambridge PhD) has
made a Youtube video of such an expedition at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzG6QcP_MNE.
To save you the trouble I attach a pic of the two connoisseurs Mike and
Darryl in mid search. And if you put in the clue “pies Lancashire”
you’ll be quite overwhelmed by size of this hoard.
Darryl (right) was a schoolmate of
PM Andy Burnham and there’s
a chair in Derek’s where Andy once sat. I don’t enquire if AB had a
favourite pie or if the tax on this delicacy will be removed, but I
can’t help marvelling at the informed discrimination of the enthusiasts.
They’ll drive hundreds of miles for a great pie. True Crazy Oiks!
